Biography

“In D La Her paintings, the perspective is that one’s place in the world is not static but changes over time and space. She blends ideas of identity, science, and metaphysics to create captivating scenes challenging visual hierarchies. Through her work, she embodies anatomical architecture and internalized identity, exploring cultural and familial connections to costume and culture. »

– Paola Gallio, curator

D La Her’s paintings, both realistic and dreamlike, explore the human figure within metropolises, where visibility does not guarantee existence. She questions the duality of urban life, composed of shared solitude, fleeting appearances, and silent quests for grounding. Her work reveals fragments of suspended lives, always in-between states, places, and identities.

Influenced by her cultural roots in an Asian country that has undergone profound socio-economic changes, she examines contemporary identity as a state in constant transformation, shaped by social expectations. Inspired by Sartre and Edward Hopper, she paints anonymous figures, freed from any characterization. Suspended between potentiality and dissolution, they become mirrors held up to the viewer

Her chromatic palette, marked by a visually striking, almost cinematic intensity, captures the light and atmosphere of fleeting moments—a winter evening, an urban dawn, a collective silence—revealing the depth of time and memory. Her meticulous brushwork offers a dual reading depending on the viewing distance: from afar, the figures fade into the scenery; up close, they reveal their full presence in a fresco teeming with detail. This dynamic reflects the dual nature of urban life, where individuals oscillate between visibility and invisibility within the crowd, their identities shaped—and sometimes erased—by the vast and indifferent city that surrounds them.
